Blankets are the new Coats!

What?!! we hear you scream. But yes, we kid you not, blankets truly are the thing you will be wearing in A/W 14.  The nights have drawn in, the leaves are dropping off the trees and the weather is getting increasingly nippy so what a more perfectly apt trend to embrace is there than the blanket coat. Come on admit it, we all love a good old snuggle up under a blanket on the sofa, but what if you can take that blanket with you and still be stylish. Burberry were the first to showcase this trend in their catwalk show way back in February and since then celebrities such as Cara Delevingne, Olivia Palermo and Kate Moss have all been seen wearing their blankets.

Burberry-Scarves-1A hybrid of a blanket combined with a coat, the newly dubbed ‘blankoat’ is the perfect Autumn to Winter transition piece.  On a sunny Autumnal day it can be too warm to put on a heavy Winter duffel coat so layering up in a blankoat is ideal.

It is versatile in that you can glam it up to wear over a dress, acting as your evening outerwear or simple dress it down with jeans and some cute ankle boots for a gorgeously effortless weekend look.

The key is to try and not look as though you have been fully cocooned in a shapeless mass of material.  To be up there in the style stakes you must remember to nip your blanket in at the waist with a belt. This creates structure to your look which avoids the scruffy, homeless look.Your new season blankoat must be colour-blocked, textured and luxe.

Blankoats are everywhere, here are a selection of more affordable ones that we can’t wait to get wrapped up in:
