The daffs are in full bloom, only a couple of weeks and the clocks flick forward and finally we are seeing more of Mr Sunshine – spring has well and truly sprung!
Whilst, this is truly a glorious thing it also fills us with a combined feeling of both dread – at the thought of having to reveal a bit more of our pale, hirsute, winter bodies, and excitement – of the knowledge that we will have to go out and buy a new spring wardrobe, hooray!
But, where to start, what are the key trends to be wearing this spring? Here is a look at the top 5 trends that we think should be making an appearance in your wardrobes:
Channel your inner Dorothy Gale and get all Kansas country and western on us by injecting some of this must have check pattern into your wardrobe. Less cutesy and more street style savvy, this seasons gingham has been scaled up to eye catching proportions and should be worn to make a statement. Confident and bold, whether you choose to tone your look down with pastel hues or go all out with monochrome, this pattern will score you maximum style points.
Not the first material you would necessarily associate with wearing in the springtime, but this seasons suede comes in cooling shades of lavendar combined with bold blues. Designers; Tommy Hilfiger, Karen Walker, Derek Lam and Altazurra all showcased this look in their spring catwalk shows. Great for layering at a time when the weather can still be very chilly – just remember not to wear it out in the rain!
Dr Livingstone I presume? Khaki, camel, tan, indeed anything that would camouflage you in the jungle. Loose floaty sheers combined with nipped in trench dresses and fern prints the look is sophisticated and upscale chic. Incredibly versatile for work wear or busy mums – lots of pockets and I challenge any child to make a grubby mark on something that already looks a bit rough and ready.
No, don’t worry we’re not transporting you back to the dreaded shoulder pads from the 80’s. 2015’s shoulder trend is about silhouette and exposure. Designers have been keen to use the less is more approach when it comes to what for many women is their finest asset. Featuring bardot, asymmetric and slashed necklines, be prepared to have a scarf or wrap at the ready for when the evenings draw in.
This look is all about layering, although admittedly, it may be a step too far for some. The principle is simple: take any skirt, be it pencil, midi, peplum, and layer it up over the top of another longer skirt to create the illusion of an apron. Handy for if you are prone to spillages; simply whip a layer away each time to spill your coffee; not so handy if you are rather hip heavy and adding any extra layers will only further your appearance of a crocheted toilet roll dolly. If you’re brave enough this look will see you score some serious street style point.
